I’m really interested in this initiative. In order to make an impact, we need to get lots of people involved and this app will empower people to be good examples for their families, friends, and neighbours.

As I’m trying to reduce my environmental footprint, I’d like to know more about which actions are the most impactful towards this goal. It would be great to have available in the app a sort of ‘Good impact rating’, from 1 to 10 let’s say, for the different positive actions that someone can take.

The rating system would have to be research-based and should take into account the benefits of an action in terms of carbon emissions, water usage, long term pollution, etc.

I’m not saying it would be easy (maybe the RMIT could help) but it would be a great tool.

    All the best,

    GM

Think global, act local. theneighbourhoodeffect.com.au and its pending behaviour-changing app should go viral as we all realise every earthling has an individual investment in a sustainable habitat for all flora and fauna (yes, we’re fauna). Climate change is the bonfire of humanity’s vanities. There is no ideology or religion to rule them all. These are understandable, even quaint human constructs but which ignore what is staring us in the face. The universe is amoral, politically indifferent and incredibly violent (see Mars). Once we realise that, we all will know what we must do to mitigate the damage we are causing and apply education, science, technology and behavioural change to sustain life on a still habitable earth.

This exciting and innovative approach offers the opportunity of making meaningful contributions from individuals, their households, families and friends and from the wider community towards sustainability …. and saving our planet’s ecosystems.

This is an innovative and practical idea that can help Canberra reduce it’s large ecological footprint of 8.9 global hectares per person.

Great idea, and Canberra is definitely an ideal market and starting point for such an initiative. I’d suggest gamification also , for example some level of status in the app for achieving goals coupled with social media sharing, for example someone might not normally share a post about the neighbourhood effect but if you award then some status they can share they may with their internet “neighbours” on social media thus perpetuating the effect.
